SUPER MOON: 2018.  The "Super Moon ", shown here at the Studio Gallery, was created from about two pounds of over-beaten flax. The flax was poured out onto a very large piece of scrim so that when the water drained out, a round-ish shape was left behind.  Repeated pours of the pulp helped solidify the circle; it was necessary to keep the pulp somewhat damp in order for it to retain its shape as it dried, without losing the irregular quality that mimicked the moon’s surface. I used watercolor crayons, pencils and gouache make the moon, working from images found in textbooks and online.
A galvanized steel plate was attached to the gallery wall, and then covered with a roll of black paper. The 6’4” x 6’4” paper moon was installed using dozens of tiny round magnets that bonded with the steel plate. I continued to work and refine the features of the moon for several days after the installation.  Many children visiting the exhibit offered their assistance and told me their own stories about what the moon meant to them. Thanks to the unevenness of the surface, I have personally discovered many new craters, ridges, valleys and mountains on the moon.
