ARTIST'S STATEMENT
Book Art is a genre that incorporates two and three dimensions; an artist’s book is meant to be handled. By circumventing the traditional barrier between the art object and the viewer, the artist’s book engages the viewer’s senses. The Book Arts genre holds great appeal for me because of this process of discovery, both in the conceptualization and during the completion of each project. |
My work incorporates a variety of media: prints, collage, watercolors and gouache, often handmade papers and found materials, chosen for texture as well as color. In addition to the standard codex, I like tunnel books and books with movable parts. The structures and formats enhance the pace of the narrative and are intended to encourage viewers’ participation.
Through two and three dimensional work, I explore themes involving the sciences, natural phenomena, travel, language and literature, memory and dreams. I was fortunate to grow up along the coast of Rhode Island, and Narragansett Bay has been a wonderful influence. My husband and family here in Bethesda, MD, have been incredibly supportive. Travel, working with professionals from many different fields, and meeting individuals who love what they do and want others to share their experiences, have reinforced my faith in the benefits of cultural and geographic diversity.
I am a proud member of Otis Street Arts Project, where artists work individually and collaboratively, and of The Studio Gallery, a cooperative gallery, at 2108 R Street, NW, in Washington, DC.
